전날 잔다리페스타 공연에서 미리 만난 리마 카토는 생각했던 것보다도 작고 조용한 사람이었습니다. 건물 출입구에 쌓여 있는 환풍기 옆에서 헬로 키티 튜너로 기타를 튜닝하는 그녀를 보고 있자니 평소의 세운상가 일대였다면 상점들과 차량, 여러 기계를 숨구멍 삼아 도시가 뿜어내는 소음에 그녀의 존재가 통째로 묻힐 수도 있지 않을까 싶었습니다. 다행히 일요일의 오래된 서울은 사람도 차도 적어 이따금씩만 시끄러웠습니다. 청계상가의 동쪽 날개 밑에서 잠시 이런저런 이야기를 나누고 사진을 찍다가 일방통행로에 거꾸로 진입한 트럭이 우리 근처에서 그만 우왕좌왕하기를 기다린 뒤 리마 카토는 담담한 목소리로 노래를 계속했습니다.

 Rima Kato turned out to be more quiet and smaller than we thought when we saw her perform at Zandari Festival the previous day. As she started tuning her guitar with the Hello Kitty tuner by a stack of ventilators, we thought this shoot would be impossible during the week because all the stores, cars and different machines in the area would probably engulf her sound in its massive noise. Fortunately in this old part of Seoul on Sunday, we only got intermittent interruptions with few cars and people. Chatting and taking photos at the east wing of Cheonggye Shopping Center, we waited for a truck that was driving the wrong way on a one-way road to leave. Soon the Japanese singer-songwriter went back to her trademark composure as she started playing again.

 계단을 타고 상가 3층으로 올라갔더니 일전에 보았던 토끼는 없고 웬 개가 우리를 경계했습니다. 짖는 개를 뒤로 하고 사생활과 관련된 수상한 제품들을 파는 가게들 옆을 지나 건물 서쪽으로 갔습니다. 바깥쪽 상가는 컨테이너로 덧댄 듯했고, 맞은편 원래 건물에서는 바람에 뭔가 자꾸 떨어져내리는 것 같았습니다. 저녁에 잡혀 있는 공연 리허설 시간이 다가왔고 우리는 간결하게 한 곡을 더 작업해보기로 했습니다. 리마 카토는 앞선 짝사랑 노래만큼이나 슬픈 가사의 노래를 하나 더 연주하기 시작했습니다.

 A dog started barking at us when we got to the third floor of the building and the rabbits we saw earlier were nowhere to be seen. Leaving the barking dog and some old shady shops behind, we headed to the west end of the floor. That side of the building had container patches all over it and we could hear the wall beginning to crumble here and there. Here she played us her last song of this episode. It wasn’t long before the rehearsal for her show that night.

 부산행 아침 기차를 가까스로 잡아탄 우리에게 전화를 건 김일두의 목소리는 요즘 잦은 사고를 조심하라고 당부했습니다. 마침 차내 스크린에서 사과조의 안내방송이 나오고 있었습니다. 무사히 부산역에 도착하자 예보와는 달리 맑고 후끈한 공기가 김일두와 함께 우리를 기다리고 있었습니다. 그의 집 근처 보수동 헌책방 골목의 까페에서 이 골목 아저씨들이 아주머니들보다 더 수다스럽다는둥, 부산에서의 공연 페이와 서울에서의 페이가 어떻다는둥 이런저런 이야기를 나누며 잠시 햇볕을 피했습니다.

 During a phone call on the train we caught at the last very minute, Kim Il Du told us to be careful mentioning the recent surge in KTX train incidents. Despite our worries, there were no problems with the train and it was very hot and beautiful outside when we got to the Busan station where he was waiting for us. After lunch, he took us to his neighborhood Bosu-dong, a charming neighborhood full of old bookstores where we sat down in a cafe for a cold glass of latte talking about his patronizing neighbors and music scenes of Busan and Seoul.

 지리를 잘 모르는 우리는 김일두의 안내를 받아 그의 짐차를 타고 남포 주변을 이곳저곳 다녀보기로 했습니다. 조선소에는 들어갈 수 없어 감천항 쪽으로 돌아나오는 길에, 언젠가 길을 잃어 들어섰다는 안구평의 가구단지에 들렀습니다. 산꼭대기에 얹힌 동네는 산밑의 항만이나 반대편의 아파트단지와 달리 아담한 곳이었습니다. 교차로 근처의 작은 집에서 마침 나서는 부부에게 허락을 청해 이 날의 작업을 시작했습니다. 노랫말대로 누군가 죽일 수도 있을 것 같은 더위였습니다.

 Quite clueless about the locations, we went for a drive around the city to eventually get to this old furniture district on the top of a hill of Gupyeong-dong, which the singer-songwriter encountered on a random night when he got lost on his way home. The area was nothing like the fabulous beaches and some posh towns on the city guidebook, yet its old buildings and hilltops felt immediately nice and cozy. Before long we spotted a pretty house and the friendly owners of the house were generous enough to let us film their house. Everything was as lovely as it could be except for the‘killing’ heat.

 김일두는 우리에게 미술이나 그래피티 하는 사람들이 이것저것 해놓고, 사진 찍으러 사람들이 오는 그런 동네가 있다면서 달동네를 볼 생각이 있느냐고 물었습니다. 산으로 다니다 보니 전반적으로 길이 험했지만, 가장 가파른 곳은 이곳 태극도마을이었습니다. 달동네에 구경와서 DSLR을 들이미는 서울 관광객 코스프레는 예정에 없었지만 어쨌든 광경이 마음에 들었고, 두 번째 곡을 이곳에서 시도해보기로 했습니다.

 As for the next location Kim Il Du asked us if would like to check out a relatively impoverished neighborhood that has been ‘artified’ by urban artists. Located high up on a hill overlooking the city, Gamcheon Culture Village is full of steep inclines and narrow ally ways with colorfull houses. Although it did seem to make us look like one of their many DSLR-equipped Seoul tourists, we had to make a brief stop on a rooftop.

 마침내 기온이 조금 내려갔고, 우리는 영도경찰서 뒷골목의 도선장에서 누군가의 배에 올라탔습니다. 가볍게 뛰어 배로 건너간 김일두와 달리 우리는 생각보다 먼 거리와 아래쪽 기름진 더러운 물을 보고 발이 얼어붙고 말았습니다. 덕택에 김일두의 놀림감이 된 우리는 다시 건너온 그와 함께 좀 더 손쉽게 넘어갈 수 있는 곳을 찾았습니다. “집에 혼자 있을 땐 제프 버클리인데 밖에서 하려니 긴장된다”고 농을 던지던 그는 예정에 없던 곳에서 연주를 부탁받자 편한 곡을 하겠다며 간결하게 연주하기 시작했습니다.

 By the time it cooled down a bit, we decided to jump from a boat to another in a marina behind Yeongdo Police Station. Unlike the local who is not afraid of water, we instantly got paralyzed at the sight of the sea but fortunately found an easier route and managed to hop onto a good-looking boat. “I’m Jeff Buckly when I play alone in my place but it gets me nervous to be playing outdoors,” said Kim Il Du. Soon his gently strumming guitar started to fill the air along with the sound of ocean waves.

 저녁이 되어 우리는 “아베크족이 즐겨 찾는다”는, 육군 부대 인근 차로에 갔습니다. 감천항이 내려다보이는 곳에 자리를 잡자 과연 차들이 잠깐씩 섰다가 우리를 피해서인지 떠나갔습니다. 김일두의 노래가 끝나면 우리도 내려갈 것이었습니다.

 The evening came and we were heading over to a driveway along the army base, apparently frequented by couples who enjoy passionate vehicle activities. As Kim Il Du was playing his last song for the day where we could look down Gamcheon Port, many cars stopped by for a second and left shortly because of the unexpected disruption from our presence. We weren’t to stay there for so long anyways.

 냉채족발을 먹으며 김일두는 부산 음악가로서 서울에 오가고 새로운 사람들을 만나며 좋은 기운을 받아와 더 힘을 내는 일종의 선순환에 대해 이야기했습니다. 우리 역시 좋은 기운을 받아왔습니다.

 While we were feasting on the famous Naengchae Jokbal for dinner, a pork knuckle dish served with chilled vegetables, he talked about how he gets positive energy and inspirations from meeting new people when vising Seoul for shows. So did we indeed from meeting him and his music in Busan.

 시간이 촉박했습니다. 평소와 달리 큰 작업을 하려니 장비 운반, 전기 확보, 사운드 모두 시간을 잡아먹어, 사운드체크를 함께한 선결에게 마지막 테이크를 제의해야만 했을 때는 이미 계획보다 두어 시간 늦은 뒤였습니다. 마지막이라는 생각에 신중해진 표정의 그들은 이내 카랑카랑한 기타를 필두로 연주를 시작했습니다.

 We were pressed for time. This project is a bit larger in scale than our regular episodes and we ended up spending quite a bit of time moving all the gear, sorting out the electricity, sound setting etc. By the time we could only do one more take with Sunkyeol, we were hours behind schedule. Sporting crunch, crisp guitar, they started to play extra carefully for the last take.

 오랜만의 작업을 위해 세 밴드를 데려간 곳은 금천구청 뒤쪽 옛 도하 부대 터에 위치한 금천아트캠프 안, 빈 건물이었습니다. 부대 내 주점이었다는 이곳은 부대 내 빈 건물들을 공연과 전시, 창작 공간 등으로 활용하는 도하 프로젝트의 일환으로 리모델링 중으로, 지하에는 아마도 간부용이었을 실내 골프연습장이 먼지구덩이가 된 채 있었습니다. 그곳에 자리를 잡은 페이션츠 세 명의 소리가, 쾌활한 그들의 성격처럼 공기를 크게 휘저었습니다.

 For our first shoot in a long while, we invited three bands to this long-disused building located in Geumcheon Art Camp, behind the district office where there used to be an army base. The building was actually a military bar on the base and it still had a mini-golf course covered with dust in the basement floor. Now it’s turned into a creative venue for exhibitions and concerts, under the name ‘Doha Project’. There we were with our second band, Patients, who were stirring up the dusty air with vibrant energy they have.

 어느새 온연한 밤이었습니다. 녹음 장비와 쾅프로그램의 장비가 같이 널부러진 바닥은 어수선했습니다. 여덟 번의 샘플 카운트를 기다린 2인조는 그들에게 빠듯한 시간과 비좁은 공간은 대수롭지 않다는 듯 강하게 스타트를 끊고, 큰 움직임으로 이 날의 마지막 곡을 연주했습니다. 애초에 겨울에 진행하기로 마음먹었던 이 작업은 3월에야 실현이 되었습니다. 이제야 그 결과물을 공개하며, 멈춰 있던 프로젝트를 느리게나마 다시 움직여볼까 합니다.

 It became dark out before we realized. The floor got as messy as it could get with our last band’s gear and our recording equipment. Today’s shoot, which we originally planned for the last winter, had been a bit delayed until it finally happened on this day in March. With this new episode, we hope our visitors see some sign of activity on this blog that has long been rather slackened.

 반포한강공원에는 날씨 좋은 일요일을 즐기러 나온 사람들이 잔디, 길, 운동장, 벤치 등에 많았습니다. 404와 함께 수상관광콜택시 정류장으로 갔더니 마침 웬 가족 손님이 수상택시에서 내리는 참이었습니다. 아니 정말로 타는 사람이 있을 줄이야, 생각보다 넓네, 우리도 이거 타볼까요 같은 이야기를 하며 장비를 풀고 보니 정류장은 물 위에 떠 있어서 조금씩 울렁이는 곳이었습니다. 게다가 드럼 의자를 깜빡 잊고 안 들고 온 관계로 조인철은 구명 튜브를 깔고 앉아야 했습니다.

 Lots of people were on the grass, walkways, basketball courts, benches in Banpo Hangang Park. A family were just getting off a water taxi as we went to the station; we didn’t know somebody would actually use this transportation. Whilst talking to ourselves about how large the interior of the taxi actually was, and how we should get a ride on it too, we put our instruments and gear in place. The station, set up on the water, was waving over the flow. With us having forgotten to bring a chair, Cho Inchul had to make do with the emergency tube.

 수상관광콜택시는 한강 르네상스 프로젝트의 일환으로 2007년 10월부터 한강 운행을 시작했습니다. 한강 르네상스 프로젝트는 2006년부터 오세훈 당시 서울특별시장이 주운 및 수변문화공간 조성과 자연성 회복, 접근성 향상, 문화기반 조성, 경관개선, 수상이용 활성화를 목표로 추진한 디자인 서울 정책의 핵심 계획입니다. 상당 부분 완료된 이 사업에는 5천억 원이 넘는 금액이 투입되었으며, 시각적인 효과 측면에서 이 사업의 꽃이라 부를만한 반포대교 남단 세빛둥둥섬(플로팅아일랜드)에 소요된 돈은 1035억 원입니다. 화재 발생, 일반인 출입이 제한된 개장기념 모피 패션쇼, 폭우에 따른 수중 고립 등 이슈가 많았던 이 섬은 5월부터 전망공간이 개방되어 일반인이 출입할 수 있게 되었습니다. 상당한 논란과 비판의 대상이 된 이 사업을 추진한 오 전 시장은 지난 8월 무상급식 주민투표 무산을 이유로 사퇴했습니다.

 The Hangang Water Taxis started operating in 2007 as a part of the Hangang Renaissance Project. The project, itself a key part of the Design Seoul Plan, was led by then-mayor Oh Se-hoon and aimed for the activation of ship transportation, waterside culture space development, reestablishment of the ecosystem, improvement of accessibility, and landscape refinement. This business, already finished for a large part, involved the amount of over 500 billion won; 103.5 billion of which was invested in the Floating Island, near the southern part of Banpodaegyo. In terms of visual impact and issue-making such as a fire during the construction, a controversial and no-public-allowed fur fashion show, physical isolation as a result of the heavy rain, without even starting about the economic validity of the business, the island is the symbol of the development plan itself. Former mayor Oh resigned from his chair last August, after the referendum about the immediate and completely free school meals, which he was against, went invalid.

 그러거나 말거나 공원의 분위기는 썩 나쁘지 않았습니다. 아니 사실, 분위기가 정말 좋았습니다. 솔직히 말하자면 무지막지한 구조물을 배경으로 무언가 음산하고 아이러니한 그림을 얻을 수 있지 않을까 하는 얄팍한 속셈이 있었지만, 무진장 좋은 날씨와 빛이 우리 술수를 망치고 말았습니다. 대신 우리는 편한 마음으로 산책하고 사진을 찍고 바람을 즐기는 사람들 곁에 자리를 잡기로 했습니다. 예쁜 하늘 아래서도 정세현의 흔들리는 노래와 조인철의 정확한 드럼은 매력 있었습니다. 사운드 문제를 핑계 삼아 404에게 이 곡을 몇 번 더 청해서 듣고 싶은 마음이 있었지만, 전날 밤샘 영화감상회에 참여한 뒤 아무것도 먹지 않고 온 정세현은 배가 고파서 힘이 안 난다며 더 이상 우리에게 괴롭힘당하기를 거절했습니다. 쌀국수를 먹기로 한 우리는 잠시 후 다른 동네로 이동한 뒤 어쩐지 부리또 집에 들어갔습니다.

 Nevertheless, the atmosphere in the park wasn’t bad. Actually it was really good. We have to confess, we had this shallow idea of a dark and ironic image which portraits our band against the massive structure; but the weather and the light was so good it ruined our scheme. Instead we took place among the people who were walking around, taking pictures, feeling the air. Even under an excessively beautiful sky, Se Chung’s quivering voice and Cho Inchul’s precise drums didn’t lose charm. We would have enjoyed asking 404 to do this last song again a few more times just to hear it, but Se Chung was just on his way from a B-movie marathon without eating anything from then; he refused our tormenting him anymore. We decided to have some pho, but oddly we ended up eating burritos.

 앨범 홍보 차 한국에 온 러시안 레드를, 소니뮤직코리아의 협조를 받아 만나게 되었습니다. 북촌 한옥마을에서 작업을 진행하기로 약속한 우리는 동네를 한 바퀴 돌아본 뒤 개방형 한옥 하늘물빛에서 허락을 맡고 잠시 실례하기로 했습니다. 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 많은 레이블 관계자 및 밴드와 크루가 우루루 몰려와 몇 평 남짓한 마루를 꽉 채우고 연주 내내 숨을 죽이고 있는 것이 꽤 재미있는 상황이었습니다. 연주가 시작되기 전 주인 할머니는 가수가 예쁘다는 언급을 하셨습니다. 과연 그랬습니다.

 An afternoon with Russian Red, who visited Korea for an album showcase, spared some time for us with the help from Sony Music Korea. Having decided to meet up at Bukchon Hanok Village, we went for a wonder and managed to get permission to have a videoshoot at the open house Haneulmoolbit. Lots of people–us, the band, their crew and the whole staff from the record label–were involved this time. We were squeezing ourselves in the little yard that is barely one or two dozen square meters big and all of them trying to keep quiet was quite a funny scene to look at. The owner of the house, an old lady, said the singer’s got good looks when Russian Red first walked in. Indeed it was.

 주인 할머니께 인사를 하고 나온 우리는 북촌 8경 중 제 5경에서 다음 작업을 함으로써 관광객다운 행보를 이어나가기로 했습니다. 적어도 그러려고 했지만, 연주를 시작하자 이내 시끄러운 관광객들에 이골이 나있는 듯한 주민 한 분이 창문을 열고 유창한 영어로 우리를 혼내는 바람에 중단되어버렸습니다. 다시 우루루 걸어서 러시안 레드의 멋진 목소리가 민폐가 되지 않을 만한 곳으로 이동해야 했지요. 밴드가 저녁에 공연을 앞두고 있어서 시간이 많지 않은 우리는 빠른 호흡으로 두 테이크만 진행하고 주변을 정리한 뒤 작별했습니다.

 After leaving the house, we tried to go on with our ‘tourist’ journey by moving onto the next shoot at one of the Bukchon 8 Views. But as soon as the band started playing, a lady, probably fed up with noisy tourists, opened her window and started yelling at us–in her perfect English. So we moved towards a vacant house, where we hoped Russian Red’s beautiful voice wouldn’t cause harm to anyone. With an upcoming gig scheduled in the evening for the band, we had to content ourselves with two fast-paced takes; quickly we packed up and said goodbye to everybody leaving in a rush.

 더운 초여름날, 하헌진을 라이브클럽 쌤에서 만났습니다. 이 공간이 건물에서 퇴거하기 전 마지막으로 일반에 공개되는 오픈데이였습니다. 북적대지는 않았지만 이따금 스탭 외의 일반인들이 오갔고, 방명록에도 제법 글이 남겨져 있었습니다. 공연장 입구 위쪽 그리고 아래쪽 계단을 따라 그간 이곳에서 있었던 공연 포스터(중 일부)가 빽빽이 붙어 있었습니다. 2000년 쌈지스페이스 바람으로 시작해 2005년 7월 이름을 바꿔 재개장한 라이브클럽 쌤은 다양한 공연을 꾸준히 수용하며 10년이 넘는 기간 동안 자리를 지켜왔으나 올 5월을 마지막으로 사라지게 되었습니다.
 2010년부터 활동을 시작한 블루스 연주자 하헌진은 한 번도 이곳에서 공연해본 적이 없다고 했습니다. 이것이 쌤에서의 첫 번째 연주인 셈입니다. 본인의 첫 번째 연주임과 동시에 아마도 이 공간에서 기록된 것들 중 마지막이 될 연주를 하게 된 그는, 이틀 전 예정에 없던 쌤 공연을 열어 많은 팬을 소환한 언니네이발관의 이석원을 이겼다며 즐거워 했습니다. 우리와 함께 적당한 곳을 찾아 여기저기 둘러본 하헌진은 공연장 무대 쪽에 기타 가방을 놓고 기둥 옆에 앉아 손가락을 풀기 시작했습니다.

 Ha Heon-Jin was already at Liveclub SSAM when we arrived. It was early summer and a hot day; also a last open day of the club before its moving out of the building. Visitors came and went now and then; the wall used as guest book held evidence of them, not countless but still quite a few. Flyers of gigs that took place here filled out the wall along the stairs leading to the door. Originally named Ssamzie Space Baram since its opening in 2000, this place changed its name to Liveclub SSAM in July 2005 and held a huge number of various musical events during its existence that went over a decade; however the month of May 2011 saw the closure of the venue.
 Our bluesman Ha Heon-Jin started playing shows in 2010, and never had a gig in SSAM: this was his first performance here. Also, this was to be the last musical performance ever to be documented here. He seemed pleased to have, unofficially, taken over the title of the last performer in SSAM, credited to the modern rock stars Sister’s Barbershop. After looking around for a nice spot, Ha Heon-Jin put down his gig bag against the stage and started flexing his fingers after sitting down beside one of the infamous sight-blocking columns.

 드러머 라일런은 공연을 한참 전에 마치고 관중 틈에서 무대를 바라보고 있었습니다. 8시를 넘겨 찾은 두리반 뒷편 야외스테이지에서는 비가 부슬부슬 내리는 와중에 모임 별이 아마츄어증폭기를 커버 중이었고, 마침 한받씨가 지나가다 라일런과 인사를 나눴습니다. 지하스테이지에서는 스탭들이 계속 물을 퍼내고 있었습니다. 부산 기반의 2인조 라싸와 뉴타운컬쳐파티 51+ 현장에서 작업하기로 한 우리는 이 무대 저 무대를 옮겨다니며 공연을 보고 일정이 끝나기를 기다렸습니다. 지하스테이지의 을씨년스러운 분위기가 일품이었지만 침수가 심한 그곳에서 무언가를 할 수는 없었기 때문에 3층에서 모든 공연이 끝난 뒤 세팅을 시작했습니다. 일부 스탭과 아직 떠나지 않은 관객 몇 명이 벽에 기대어 자리를 지키는 가운데, 에릭이 컨트롤하는 루프들과 라일런의 탬버린을 시작으로 한 라싸의 연주가 공연이 모두 끝난 두리반 3층을 다시 한 번 잠깐 동안 소리로 채웠습니다.

 Rhylon, the drummer who had finished his performance a while ago, was looking at the stage among the crowd. Around 8PM, on the outdoor stage of Duriban were playing byul.org, doing a cover of amature amplifier. The staff were bailing out the rainwater flooding the basement floor. We waited for the 51+ festival to reach its end, as we decided to film LHASA, the Busan-based duo, after everyone leaves the stage. The underground stage had a fabulous spooky look, but it was so flooded we couldn’t do anything there. So after the last band finished their performance on the third floor, we started setting up the gears. LHASA’s performance, that took off with Eric’s loops and Rhylon’s tambourine, filled once again the deserted Duriban’s third floor with their sounda for a few minutes, along with some of the staff and a few people still hanging around leaning against the wall.

 행사 일정에 느닷없이 끼어든 우리 작업을 허락해준 자립음악생산자조합과 뉴타운컬쳐파티 51+ 스탭들의 협조에 감사의 말을 전합니다. 그리고 공사 시행사와 이주대책 및 상호간 민형사상 분쟁에 대해 합의를 하고 인근에 새로 가게를 열기로 한 두리반에게 축하의 말을 전합니다. 500일이 넘는 기간 동안 철거 농성장이자 가장 흥미로운 공간이었던 두리반은 이제 모든 일정을 마무리하고 곧 건물을 비워줄 것입니다. 그곳에서 모인 사람들과 그곳에서 뿜어져 나온 기운이 어디로 가서 또 어떤 일들을 일구어낼지 주목합니다.

 We thank Jarip Musicians’ Union and the New Town Culture Party 51+’s staff for letting us, who were so last minute, do this. We also express congratulations to Duriban for having reached an agreement on relocation plans and settlements of civil and criminal legal conflicts with the construction company. Duriban will soon end its one-and-a-half year journey as a sit-in squat fighting against the injustice and as the most interesting place in Seoul. Fingers crossed. Its people and energy and all the things they will create elsewhere, will have our full support.

LHASA’s Bandcamp

 후배가 한 잔 하자며 데려간 포장마차 안에 난데없이 피아노가 있길래 작업 장소로 점찍어 두고 있던 차에 크리스 가르노와 연결이 되었습니다. 피아노 조율이 좀 나갔지만 그는 괜찮다고 했고, 사장님은 문을 열어놓을테니 알아서 쓰라고 허락해주셨습니다. 정오 즈음에 밴드 및 리플레이뮤직 관계자분들과 보문시장 뒤쪽 입구에서 만난 뒤 조금 걸어 내려가 왼쪽에 있는 보문동일번지 가게 천막문을 열고 들어섰습니다. 이 친구들이 예상한 것보다 시장이 훨씬 허름했는지 재미있어 하는 티가 역력했습니다. 크리스가 피아노를 만지는 동안 루카스는 시멘트 바닥에 첼로 자리를 잡았습니다. 사운드와 영상 체크를 하는 사이 드러머 벤, 리플레이뮤직 실장님들, 우리 나머지 멤버들은 햇살이 간헐적으로 내리쬐는 입구쪽에서 담배를 피우며 그 과정을 지켜보았습니다.

 At a bar we were taken to at a random night, we saw a piano sitting at a corner. It was so out of the place that we immediately wanted to have a shoot there and luckily we got to reach Chris around that time.
The place turned out to be all great for our new episode; the piano was a little out of tune but Chris was okay with it, and so was the owner of the bar with us doing a shoot here. We met the band and people from Leaplay Music at around noon at the back entrance of Bomun Market, then we went in through the tarp doors the tavern Bomundong Ilbeonji. The musicians seemed to enjoy the charm of a shabby street market. While Chris was checking the piano, Lucas put his cello on the cement floor. The sound and video were also being checked out while Ben, the drummer, Leaplay Music crew, and the rest of us were standing by the doors under the occasional sunlight, watching and smoking.

 다음 순서로는 시장 한가운데 세갈래길으로 가서 아주머니들께 양해를 구했는데, 장사 방해하는 게 아닐까 싶어 좀 민망했지만 오히려 식혜도 챙겨주시고 편하게 대해주셨습니다. 한쪽 가게에 앉아 계시던 분은 자제분도 연기를 전공하고 있다면서 친근감을 표하셨고, 딱히 뭐라 대답할 말이 잘 생각나지 않았지만 기분은 나쁘지 않았습니다. 우리는 재개발 대상인 시장 한쪽에서 올라가는 주상복합 공사 현장의 리프트 소리가 잦아들기를 기다렸습니다. 주위가 조용해지는 타이밍이 찾아왔고, 분주한 듯 한적한 듯 적당히 사람들이 오가는 가운데서 크리스와 루카스는 노래를 연주해나갔습니다. 렉앤플레이의 2010년 마지막 작업이었습니다.

 For the next shoot we moved to the center of the market. The market ladies were extremely nice to us; we thought we might be a major bother for them but it turns out they gave each of us a cup of sikhye. A shop owner displayed his kind nature, telling us her son who was ‘also studying drama and acting’. Well… it was kind of hard to make any proper response to that but we didn’t dislike it.
 Part of this beautiful market has been planned to be redeveloped and we could only just wait until the noise from what will later become sci-fi looking apartment complexes stop for a bit. Finally that timing came when lifts at the construction held still, then Chris and Lucas started playing in the middle of a relatively crowded market. This is the last episode of recandplay in the year 2010.

 자크 힐은 페달과 심벌의 독특한 운용 및 매우 강한 스트로크로 유명한 드러머입니다. 그간 많은 밴드를 거쳐온 그는 실험적인 기타리스트이자 밴드 헬라에서의 동료였던 카슨 맥휘터와 함께 공연차 지난 9월 한국을 찾았고, 공연을 기획한 슈퍼칼라슈퍼의 도움을 받아 그들을 만났습니다. 션 메일론이 점찍어줘서 미리 봐둔 어느 오피스텔 옥상, 헬기 착륙장에 경비 아저씨 몰래 올라갈 계획이었지만 비가 왔습니다. 다행히 박다함의 도움을 받아 문래동에 있는 앵클어택의 작업실을 즉석에서 빌릴 수 있었습니다. 밴드의 연습실을 빌릴 줄 알았으면 굳이 집에서 앰프랑 드럼을 들고 오지 않아도 됐을텐데, 싶었지만 이 정도 삽질이야 한 두 번 겪는 일 아니니까요. 하지만 결국 남의 악기를 쓸 수는 없었습니다. 작업에 임한 몇 분 동안 자크 힐은 드럼을 연주함과 동시에 끝장을 내버렸기 때문이죠. 놀라 뛰쳐나온 아래층 아저씨의 고함 소리가 완전히 묻힐 정도로 힘이 실린 두드림에, 원래 허술했던 하이햇은 시작하자마자 체인이 나갔고, 스네어는 자꾸 스탠드에서 튀어나오고, 심벌은 반죽마냥 눈앞에서 흐물흐물 변형했습니다. 결국 심벌님은 타악기로서의 수명을 다하고 기념품으로 전직했습니다… 옆에서는 카슨 맥휘터가 어느새 손에서 피를 흘리며 기타를 긁어대고 있었습니다. 일요일 오후 비온 뒤의 길 좁고 건물 낮은 공장 지역은 차분하달지 어수선하달지 애매한 느낌이었지만, 두 명의 즉흥연주가 공기를 한 번 휩쓸고 간 뒤에는 확실히 어딘지 모를 고요함 같은 것이 남아 있었습니다.

 Zach Hill is a drummer who has participated in numerous bands, and who is known mainly for his hard hits and unique uses of pedals and cymbals. He came to Korea on a tour this September with experimental guitarist and former Hella bandmate Carson McWhirter; Supercolorsuper, who organized the shows, helped us meet them. Originally we were thinking of a helicopter pad on the top of an apartment complex Sean Maylone told us about and we had a perfect plan to sneak in all the gears, which didn’t work out because of the rain. But we were lucky enough to arrange an alternative place, this really cool studio of the drummer from Ankle Attack, in the last minute thanks to Park Daham. Well we didn’t need to have two cars to carry amps and other heavy stuff after all if we were going to end up shooting in a band’s studio. In the end it turned out that we needed our own drum set anyways. During the shoot, he was taking the fragile drum set into pieces as he perform. Of course the guy downstairs came to shout but he just couldn’t be heard. The hi-hat chain was coming off after a second, the snare springing out of its stand while we were witnessing the symbol getting warbled and it probably has had it. Next to this we see Carson whose finger started to bleed on his guitar. This old steel industry district on a sunday afternoon after rain is calming and somewhat distracting at the same time, but it was clearly the air of silence that filled the area after the storm of the improvisation.
