백현진, 정재일
Baik Hyun Jhin, Jung Jae Il

 우리는 몇 번의 연락 끝에 백현진을 만나, 입대를 앞둔 정재일이 녹음 중이던 성북동 소닉엣지 스튜디오로 일정을 논의하러 갔습니다. 백현진이 어어부프로젝트의 신보 녹음 차 출국을 앞두고 있었기 때문에 그 주 안에 작업을 진행하기로 해습니다. 다음 며칠 간 피아노를 구하러 빨빨 돌아다닌 우리는 원래 낙원상가에서 피아노를 빌려 서울아트시네마 앞 공터에 놓고 싶었지만, 3시간에 걸쳐 관계자들을 만나고 관리소장으로부터 낙원빌딩의 역사에 대한 강의를 들은 뒤 마침내 거절당했습니다. 그 다음에는 트위터에서 누군가 알려준 당인리 커피공장- 앤트러사이트에 전화를 했고, 사장님은 손님이 있을 시간인데도 비교적 흔쾌히 승낙을 해주었습니다. 오후 느지막이 앤트러사이트에서 만났을 때는 꽤나 더웠고 정재일은 어느새 맥주를 마시고 있었습니다. 백현진은 옷을 갈아입었고, 첫 곡을 마무리한 뒤 우리는 잠시 휴식시간을 가졌습니다.

 After some amount of phone calls and text messages, we finally met Baik Hyun Jhin and went together to the studio Sonicedge, where Jung Jae Il was recording his latest album before his military service. Since the former was about to go abroad for the recording of the new UhUhBoo Project album, we decided to move quickly. Spending the following days trying to find a piano, we originally meant to borrow one from Nakwon Arcade and place it on the rooftop, before Seoul Art Cinema. However, after three hours of talking to somebody and then to somebody else, which was summed up by a lecture given by the superintendent on the history of Nakwon Building, we were given negative response. Then we called Danginri Coffee factory, or Anthracite Coffee Roasters, as suggested by a twitter follower. The owner was generous and asked for understanding of the customers. We met late in the afternoon; already summer was on its way. Jung Jae Il has had his beer, Baik Hyun Jhin changed his shirt, we went through the first song and took a break.

 백현진은 녹음된 소리를 확인한 뒤 사장님과 대화를 나누고 있었고 우리는 그 사이 피아노를 테라스로 옮겼습니다. 주변이 소란스러워져 아래쪽을 내다보니 웬 아주머니가 이쪽을 노려보며 화를 내고 있었고, 그 옆에는 경찰차가 서 있었습니다. 소음민원을 넣은 것이죠. 여태껏 작업하면서 제지를 강하게 받은 적이 처음이라 우리는 조금 당황했습니다. 경찰관은 자주 겪은 일인 듯 우호적이긴 했지만 어쨌든 주민들과 친하게 지내는 게 서로서로 좋겠다고 사장님에게 충고한 뒤 돌아갔습니다.

 어쩌면 좋지 싶어 머뭇거리던 차, 조금 전 대화에 등장했던 1층의 빈 공간 이야기가 나왔습니다. 철문을 열고 들어가니 이곳이 공장이었을 때 작업장이나 대형 창고로 쓰였을 법한 높고 넓은 빈 방이 있었고, 우리 모두 그곳에 반해버렸습니다. 울림도 좋고, 널부러진 자재 및 가구들이 풍기는 분위기도 훌륭해서 피아노를 들고 내려오기로 했습니다. 전문가라면 둘이서 옮길 업라이트 피아노에 남자 일곱 명이 붙어서 끙끙대는 모습은 퍽 우스꽝스러웠지만 별로 상세히 회고하고 싶지는 않은 추억입니다. 여튼 피아노 위치를 잡은 뒤 정재일은 맥주를 하나 더 마시러 갔습니다. 백현진은 다시 옷을 갈아입었고, 주변 아파트 주민들의 주말 저녁식사 시간을 방해하지 않는 이곳에서 노래를 불렀습니다.

 Baik Hyun Jhin was talking with the owner after checking the recorded sound; we were moving the piano to the terrace. Suddenly the air was disturbed. In front of the factory some angry woman stood pointing at us, and a police car stood by: noise complaint. It was actually the first time we went under serious restraint, and we were a little bit baffled. The police officer was friendly, nevertheless he advised the owner not to get into trouble with the neighborhood and left.

 We were kind of lost when the owner told us about this empty space on the first floor. As we opened the metal doors we found a large and high hall, probably some storage place back when this place was a shoe factory. The echo was great, the waste and furniture lying around too; we loved the room. We had to take the piano downstairs. Usually, two professionals can move an upright piano, but we were seven men desperately holding onto it as customers looked at us strangely; the scenery was quite comical. Anyhow we set the piano in its place, and Jung Jae Il went grab another beer. Baik Hyun Jhin changed his shirt once again, and started singing in this place where no nearby family could be disturbed during dinner.

 피아노를 도로 올리기는 의외로 내리기보다 쉬웠습니다. 오랜만에 힘을 써서인지, 날씨 때문인지, 두 사람의 강렬한 음악에 집중해서인지, 퍽 노곤했습니다. 맛있는 밥과 술이 필요한 타이밍이었습니다.

 Getting the piano back up was surprisingly easier than taking it downstairs. Due to the unusual exercise, or to the weather, or maybe to our focusing on the two musicians' intense performance, we were quite tired. It was highly time for some good food and a drink.
