Bridget and the Puppycats

 서교지하보도가 폐쇄된다는 소식이 들렸기 때문에 렉앤플레이 첫 촬영은 꼭 거기에서 하기로 했습니다. 수능이 끝나도 추위는 가실 줄 몰라 바깥 길거리는 추웠고, 지하보도 안쪽도 추웠습니다. 계단을 내려가고 있자니 우쿨렐레와 기타 소리가 들렸습니다. 이 날씨에 이런 데서 이러고 있을 사람은 우리가 촬영할 밴드 뿐입니다. 역시나 브리짓과 수가 연습하고 있었고, 조금 기다리고 있자니 레베카와 케이시와 팀이 계단에서부터 악기를 연주하며 내려와 합류했습니다.

 Upon hearing news of the upcoming closedown of Seogyo Underpass, we knew where the first RECANDPLAY shooting should take place. As it always has been the CSAT week was biting cold, both outside and inside the underpass. Walking down the stairs we heard some ukulele and guitar sounds. Anyone weird enough to be playing instruments here in this weather could be nobody but our guests. And there they were, Bridget and Sue rehearsing; it wasn't long before Rebecca, Cassie and Tim joined us, their instruments blaring long before we could even see them walk down the stairs.

 수능 하니까 드는 생각입니다만, 언제부턴가 어느 학교 어느 학원이나 원어민 영어 강사들을 고용하기 시작했고 여기저기 100% 원어민과 함께하는 영어캠프 등이 끊임없이 개설됐습니다. 자연스럽게 길거리에서 외국인과 마주치기도 굉장히 쉬워졌지요. 예컨대 5년 전만 생각해봐도, 이 같은 인종의 다양성에 조금 놀라곤 합니다. 이와 함께 홍대 앞 외국인 밴드들도 많이 생겨났습니다. 우리 카메라와 녹음기 앞에서 연주를 하고 있는 인디포크 밴드 브리짓 앤 더 퍼피캣츠처럼 말입니다. 처음에는 워낙 드물다 보니 낯설었지만 어느새 한국의 거리풍경과 자연스레 하나가 된 외국인들처럼 이 밴드들도 홍대씬에 스며들어, 기존의 사람들과 영향을 주고 받으며 새로운 무언가를 만들어낼 겁니다. 일요일 한낮 서교지하보도에 멋들어지게 녹아든 이 밴드의 사랑스런 연주처럼요.

 Speaking of the CSAT, do you remember how every school and private academies in Korea at some time began hiring native English teachers, and English camps sprang about everywhere? And how it was no longer unusual to see a foreigner on the street? When I think of, let's say, just five years ago, this new diversity is kind of astonishing. This change also led to the forming of lots of non-Korean bands in Hongdae; like today's indie folk action, Bridget and the Puppycats. In the same way as expats less and less look foreign and more and more blend into the Korean cityscape, all these new bands will assimilate into the Hongdae scene to interact with local acts and create something new. Just like this adorable band, sweetly blending with Seogyo Underpass on a Sunday afternoon.
