수리수리 마하수리

무더운 여름을 예고하듯 후덥지근한 날이었습니다. 약속 장소인 정릉천은 얼마 전 시작한 하천 정비 때문에 다소 어수선하고 물도 깨끗하지 않았습니다. 모두 모인 우리는 밴드의 지인이자 동네 주민인 달분씨의 안내를 받아 전에 봐두었던 골목으로 향했습니다. 오마르와 정현의 노래가 수리수리 마하수리와 함께한 정릉 탐험의 시작을 알렸습니다.
It was a hot day, as if the omen of this hell of a summer. Jeongneung-cheon, where we were supposed to meet, was a little bit messy due to the recent river maintenance project. Once gathered, we headed to an alleyway we had seen before following the guide of Dallboun, the band's acquaintance and local resident. The voices of Omar and JungHyun announced the start of our adventure with SuriSuri MahaSuri in Jeongneung.
근처에 있는, 지역 사회 활동가인 돌밭 선생님네에 짐을 놔두었기 때문에 그곳으로 가서 목을 축였습니다. 우리는 최대한 간편하게 작업하는 것을 좋아해서 뮤지션들에게도 그러기를 권하는데, 이런 우리의 바람이 무색하게 수리수리 마하수리는 연주할 곡마다 다른 의상을 준비해오는 치밀함을 뽐냈습니다. 미나롬의 퍼커션을 올려놓을 수 있는 마당 테이블 곁에 자리를 잡고 다음 곡을 청했습니다.
Our stuff was at Dolbat's, a local activist; that is where we headed to quench our thirst. We usually like to move around with the least amount of equipment, and try to recommend the same to the musicians. However, our band displayed readiness by preparing different costumes for each song. We set ourselves up at the front yard where was a table to put Minarom's percussions on, and asked the band for the next song.
이 날 우리는 작업을 해오며 두 번째로 경찰을 만났습니다. 옆집에서 낮잠을 자던 아저씨에게 아무래도 과하게 민폐를 끼친 모양입니다. 하긴 이 아담한 동네에서의 한적한 오후라면 방해받지 않고 싶어할 만했습니다. 얕은 산 위에 오밀조밀 지어진 집, 마당과 밭과 수풀, 허름한 골목과 계단, 화려하지 않은 교회와 절. 개발의 부재가 주는 모종의 아늑함이 매혹적이었습니다. 우리는 짐을 챙겨 정릉천 쪽으로 다시 내려간 뒤 공사 구획 테이프를 넘어 한 빈집으로 들어갔습니다.
This day we met the police for the second time since we started our project; we must have interrupted the nap of the guy next door. Indeed, no one would like an afternoon in this cozy town being disturbed. Tiny houses on the hill, yards and gardens and trees, old alleys and stairs, humble church and temple. Enchanting was the coziness given by absence of development. We took our stuff, went back down to Jeongneung-cheon, and got past construction tapes towards an abandoned house.
60년대 은행장을 지낸 누군가의 집이었다던 이곳은 수풀이 우거지고 곳곳이 부서진 지금도 부의 흔적을 간직한 채였습니다. 넓은 정원에는 수영장이 늪으로 변해 있었고, 꺼진 계단을 조심스레 밟아 발코니 딸린 2층으로 올라가면 각국 언어로 된 신문과 잡지, 만료된 어음, 부서진 레코드 조각, 옷가지와 악세사리 등이 바닥 가득 널부러져 그 변색과 변형으로 세월을 증명하고 있었습니다.
숨겨진 이세계에 도착한 모험가처럼 들뜬 우리 마음을 가라앉혀준 것은 무리지어 달려드는 숲모기였습니다. 오래 머물기가 힘들었지만, 이 버려진 장소를 그대로 떠나기엔 아쉬웠습니다. 정원에서 한 곡을 더 하고 나자 배터리가 방전되었고, 우리 모험은 막을 내렸습니다.
It used to be occupied by a banker in the 60's; it held traces of the wealth even weathered and with plants all over. In the large front yard a swimming pool had turned into a swamp. We walked cautiously up the broken stairs to the second floor with a balcony, where old newspapers and magazines from around the world, expired bills, fragments of vinyl records, clothes and accessories, all worn-out, were testifying the years past.
Our mind would have continued wandering in this hidden world, was it not for mosquitoes. We had no choice but to get away from them, but we couldn't just leave this lost place like that. We took time for a last song in the front yard, when our battery ran out and forced us to end the adventure.
수리수리 마하수리는 모로코 출신으로 한국에서 생활하는 오마르와 함께 종종 잼을 하던 정현이 온라인으로 미나롬을 끌어들여 결성되었습니다. 이들은 서울 이곳저곳에서 꾸준히 공연을 하고 있으며, 9월부터 모로코에서 열리는 국경 없는 지구Terre Sans Frontiere라는 레지던시 겸 페스티벌에 참여할 예정입니다.
SuriSuri MahaSuri was formed after JungHyun who used to jam with the Moroccan young man Omar Sbitar, contacted Minarom online. They perform steadily in various venues around Seoul, and are participating in the artist residency and festival of Terre Sans Frontiere which will be held this fall in Morocco.
